McLaren-Robertson Leonardo Refurb 11.2021
Partial Demolitions
The Challenge
This former school in the beautiful Victorian Leonardo building Leeds was to be completely refurbished requiring the facade to be retained, reconconfigured to incorporate a 1960's extension. I was engaged by Robertson Construction who were appointed as the PC overseeing the works for the Client McLaren, my task was to review the arrangements for the asbestos removal, temporary works and partial demolitions.
My Solution
I received all the necessary information and reviewed this in advance of my site visit where I met with Robertson Site Manager and their demolition contractor, I pointed out areas that required immediate action as well as making recommendations particularly on the sequencing of works to ensure fire safety was properly managed.
The Result
Following my site visit a report was issued with the recommendations fully implemented and the works were completed without incident.
My/Our Comments
Careful planning must be taken on all demolition projects but particularly when undertaking partial demolition with a heavy reliance on temporary works, soft strip is one of the most hazardous activities and the supervision of this should reflect this.
Finally adequate welfare facilities are essential, demonstrates respect for the workforce and is a useful indicator of the SHE&Q arrangements.
